IG Metall: From the German Empire to Today Our History

Our union was founded in 1949. Since then, we have been advocating nationally and internationally for fair living conditions, living wages, and decent work.

Industries Many industries, one union

IG Metall is often equated with the metal, steel, and electrical industries. However, we represent workers in a wide variety of sectors. Our members include not only blue-collar workers but also engineers, technicians, and office workers.
